Two years ago for Kelsey's birthday, she received a kit to grow butterflies. I never sent away for them. I thought she was probably too young to be interested in them or learn anything from the experience of watching them grow. She really did not even ask what it was and moved on the present. I decided I would put it away for the following year when the experience would be more appreciated. However, as I do lot, I put it away.....some place safe ....and forgot about it.
Well, this year guess what I came across high up in my closet in one of my very large and overstuffed rubbermaid bins? Yes A grow your own Butterfly kit. So, I sent away for the little larvae since the weather has been getting more and more mild. It is important for them to shipped when its not too cold or too hot. A little over a week went by when we received them in the mail...on a cold and wet morning. The poor little things were frozen I think. We opened the box and looked inside their little clear cup... and all we saw were 5 tiny black things....and not one was moving. Nice, this was supposed to be a lesson of life - not death. Mommy really went and did it now.
I told them they just needed to warm up - maybe, I had hoped. I discreetly left them on the bar, being careful not to mention them in the case they should parish. Thank you Lord! Sure enough by that night, those tiny black things were squirming up and down the cup.

.
Over the next few days, they grew and grew, and ...grew. More and more silk webs were in the cup as well. It became very gross to look at, with all their poop and webs everywhere, but those tiny bugs grew to be big, fat black and yellow striped fuzzy caterpillars. It had only been 8 days since got them in the mail and I knew that any day we would wake up and find them hanging upside down in their chrysalis. Kelsey and Carter woke up every morning and ran to go check out their butterflies.
As excited as they were to see how they grew every day, Kelsey, who gets very attached to things, was also very worried about the day we would set them free. (That is if I didn't do something wrong and kill them first).
In preparation of Spring, we watched the caterpillars grow. In celebration of Spring, we saw the butterflies off to their new world. All the changes made in such short amount of time. It has been an awesome learning experience for Kelsey and Carter - to learn of change, growth and all the wonders of God's creations! Kelsey and Carter were sad them to let them go, but also very joyous at the same time - that they had gone through so many changes and came out such beautiful butterflies. Kelsey was so proud that she "helped" them through their journey of life.
Kelsey is now over her sadness of setting her butterflies free, and has moved on to her next project. "Mommy!! I have the bestest idea ever in the world! Let's get some eggs and hatch some baby chicks!!Ohhhhh they would be so cute...! and we can play with them!!YES! It's a great idea!!!"
I really, really love my kids, ....but I don't think so.
You are such a great mommy! What a fun experience! Good luck with the chicks. :)
