Can You Turn That Down?

These days, the music around our house is usually family friendly music. In particular, since Kelsey is 5, we may hear any and all Disney princess music coming from her room at any time of day - even in the kitchen. "Can you pleassse turn it down?".

The other music we hear is not so bad, I must say, after all it does reflect her personal interests. She loves musicals and stage productions and is very excited about our upcoming adventure to see the Broadway production of Mary Poppins. Yes, Chimm Chimeny is a popular tune, as well as Supercalifragilistexpialidocious, Anything from the Wizard of Oz, and The Sound of Music. She also listens to the likes of Lisa Loeb, Sarah MacLachlan, Andrea Bocelli and James Blunt...all of which I can certainly tolerate at a louder decibal.

One morning over breakfast after i had asked her to turn her music down, she asked me what music I liked when I was a little girl. I could not remember what I listened to at her age, but I am pretty sure I did not have a CD player or a radio in my room at her age either.

It did get me wondering though, so I looked online to find out what was playing on the radio during the most important time period in a girls life - senior year of high school. I graduated in 1989.

01. Look Away » Chicago
02. My Prerogative » Bobby Brown
03. Every Rose Has Its Thorn » Poison
04. Straight Up » Paula Abdul
05. Miss You Much » Janet Jackson
06. Cold Hearted » Paula Abdul
07. Wind Beneath My Wings » Bette Midler
08. Girl You Know Its True » Milli Vanilli
09. Baby, I Love Your Way-Freebird » Will To Power
10. Giving You The Best That I Got » Anita Baker

I played a few of the songs from the list on Itunes for her to hear. While listening to them, and inadvertantly getting lost in the memories, I was taken back a few, ahemm, several years to 1989. She looked at me for a few seconds and then all she said was, "Mom, can you turn that down?"

Get Well Soon Grandpa Rey!

Todd was saddened this past week with news that his Dad was admitted to the hospital in Lincoln. While Kelsey and Carter are too young to understand, and were not told any details, they had noticed Todd was sad and asked why.

At the news of Grandpa Rey being sick and not feeling well, thoughtful Kelsey had an idea to draw him pictures and send them to him. Carter and I thought that was a great idea, but I thought a faster way to receive his homemade get well wishes was to take their pictures of their drawings and post them here.

Kelsey drew a picture of herself, Carter, Mom, Dad, and Grandpa Rey and Grandma Georgie standing next to an upside down tree - upside down because "Texas is underneath Nebraska on the map".

Carter drew fans and cords because he thinks everyone thinks they are just as great as he does. Also, we know Grandpa Rey understands what makes Carter tick and could appreciate his fans and electrical cords for what they are - and probably just as much as he does.

Get well soon Grandpa Rey Rey! We love and miss you.

And Then There Were Three........

Todd was in Oregon this week so I was left to pull the cart on my own. Not always a bad thing, of course I have heard absence makes the heart grow fonder. Well, his absence definitely made this heart grow REAL fond of him.

It all started with a long sad teary goodbye from the kids. Six days is like a year to a 3 and 5 year old when they are not used to Dad being gone. To mom, it was a chance to get some projects done, like finish a book for my book club, start painting the baseboards and get my school/organize station in the kitchen set up for the upcoming school year. Woo hoo!

Monday morning, after dropping the kids off at a two week Summer camp, Todd and I got to go out to eat - no kids. It was awesome. He left for the airport, and I ran a few arrands before heading over to pick them up. Kelsey was a teary mess. She has definitely hit the emotional trials and tribulations of being a girl. Five year old girls don't always know how to communicate effectively to their friends, and all kinds misunderstanding or misinterpretations happen....leading to hurt feelings. I was sooo not expecting this nor ready how to deal with it. Carter came home and said it was boring.

Little did I know this was my foreshadowing to the week ahead.

Tuesday, the weeping got worse due to missing Daddy. Carter cried and could not sleep alone. Kelsey cried if a anyone looked at her the wrong way. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance that night to read. No worries, there is always the next 4 days. Right? Wednesday I had an appointment while they were at Camp so I had to wait until they were in bed that night......at 11:30....1:00....2:30..and finally for the last tuck in at 5:25. Ughhh

Thursday was a crap shoot at this point. We rolled out of our sleepless induced stupor and headed out the door for a drive thru breakfast and coffee - and on to get much needed haircuts. So I packed plenty of Dum-Dums to bribe the troops into being well mannered in the Salon while the other one was being "detained" by the evil person cutting theri hair.
After making it through the haircuts, I drove through for lunch and went straight home for naps. A scheduled afternoon play date needed well rested kids...ahemmm...Moms. Once asleep for naps, I fell asleep on the couch for an hour only to wake up to a sound of snickering and crinkly paper in the kitchen pantry. I open the door only to find both kids engrossed in a self made snack of sprinkles. GREEN sprinkles. Green smiles and teeth, green sprinkles all over the floor, and feet......and everywhere those four little feet ran. Sighh. Sorry, picture taking last on my list so you'll just have conjure up your own image.

Thursday night was not much better, the tears got bigger for missing Dad, and Carter could not calm down until about midnight while I lay next to him. The ONLY way this was going to happen without interruption form Kelsey girl was to bribe her with being allowed to sleep in my bed with me. I finally got to sleep about 2:30 to wake up at 5:30 when Kelsey had a nightmare. That was that.

Soon it was 9 a.m. and I dropped them off at camp. I was finally able to get some alone time. I felt it for the first time all week... relaxation and the feeling everything was going to get back to normal. Todd was going to be home Saturday night and I could not wait. I missed him, the kids missed him..... I went to pamper myself with a relaxing pedicure ...should have brought my book, but I gave up on that happening this week. Instead I made some phone calls that I had not had a chance to make all week. Ran a few more errands then off to pick the kids up from Camp.

With a more relaxed and positive outlook, I picked up a smiling and happy Kelsey from her class. She said she had a great day. We went to get Carter, only to be met with a screaming Carter and two frantic teachers - total hoopla. Apparently, another little boy pulled on Carter's arm, followed by a little girl that fell on them both with Carter on the bottom. I sent Kelsey home with a friend and rushed Carter to the ER. Poor little guy cried all the way there with an ice pack on his arm. At this point, I knew ANYTHING could happen and whatever, I'll roll with it. I mean, what else could happen? I already knew that ultimately NOTHING was in my control this week. I gave up on that Thursday morning.Carter was a super patient. He took his Xray's and did everything the Doctor told him to do. He ad a dislocated elbow. Very painful, but very fixable. So with a quick jerk and a gentle twist, Carter was able to move his arm again...and 5 minuted later was using it and realized "both my arms work" again. Pure joy from a little boy. Pure joy from a Mom who could just laugh and look back at the week there were only three.

Little People, BIG Accomplishments

I figure as mom of two great kiddos and the only author/photographer/editor of this blog, I have earned certain braggin' rights.

This has been a weekend of great accomplishments. First, after 4 weeks of swim lessons, frustrations and many trips to the pool, both kids are now officially swimmers. While Carter is proud of his new diving skills and swimming the distance under water with no help, Kelsey had enough confidence to finally go down the slide all be her self!! No help from Mom or Dad from the side of the pool. After about a dozen times of strutting her stuff up those stairs and around again, she finally got pooped. The rest of the time she took it easy while practicing her freestyle and standing on her head. Not only are they proud of themselves, but seeing them be proud and reason to be is that makes parenting all worth it. So here's to my guppies!

Sunday brought light to a new day and more big goals in store. Kelsey asked me to show her how to tie her own shoe. While this is on our list of things to do before school starts, we had not yet made the attempt. I showed her only two times and she was a pro. I remember it took me about a week of practicing before getting it down. Such proud big sister she is. Even Carter was so proud of her, he even let her tie his shoes for him. Carter on the other hand, was super proud of his accomplishments of finally drawing a super size fan that really looked like a fan. The things we take for granted as grown ups are so huge to them. Watching them working and not giving up, and bask in the glory of their newly accomplished skills puts everything into perspective. So Proud of my little people!!

Are Monkeys Smarter Than Humans?

Just this morning, I was preparing breakfast. I had a request for a banana from Carter. So, as I picked a banana from the bunch, he bellows over to me not to peel it. He wants to do it. So I hand over the banana to him. After several attempts, he asks for help to open and peel the banana. I can't open the darn thing. It is on the green side, but in trying to break the stem off, I only created a squishy mess.

Later today while surfing the Internet while shopping for a new camera, I came across a video on how to open a banana. I had to watch. Who ever said monkeys can't teach humans anything. Maybe, just maybe, they are smarter than us.

Fourth of July - Malousek Style

This year, we decided to take the kids to a Texas hill country resort to celebrate the Fourth of July. It was so much fun, we decided to make it an annual family tradition.
