Can You Turn That Down?

These days, the music around our house is usually family friendly music. In particular, since Kelsey is 5, we may hear any and all Disney princess music coming from her room at any time of day - even in the kitchen. "Can you pleassse turn it down?".

The other music we hear is not so bad, I must say, after all it does reflect her personal interests. She loves musicals and stage productions and is very excited about our upcoming adventure to see the Broadway production of Mary Poppins. Yes, Chimm Chimeny is a popular tune, as well as Supercalifragilistexpialidocious, Anything from the Wizard of Oz, and The Sound of Music. She also listens to the likes of Lisa Loeb, Sarah MacLachlan, Andrea Bocelli and James Blunt...all of which I can certainly tolerate at a louder decibal.

One morning over breakfast after i had asked her to turn her music down, she asked me what music I liked when I was a little girl. I could not remember what I listened to at her age, but I am pretty sure I did not have a CD player or a radio in my room at her age either.

It did get me wondering though, so I looked online to find out what was playing on the radio during the most important time period in a girls life - senior year of high school. I graduated in 1989.

01. Look Away » Chicago
02. My Prerogative » Bobby Brown
03. Every Rose Has Its Thorn » Poison
04. Straight Up » Paula Abdul
05. Miss You Much » Janet Jackson
06. Cold Hearted » Paula Abdul
07. Wind Beneath My Wings » Bette Midler
08. Girl You Know Its True » Milli Vanilli
09. Baby, I Love Your Way-Freebird » Will To Power
10. Giving You The Best That I Got » Anita Baker

I played a few of the songs from the list on Itunes for her to hear. While listening to them, and inadvertantly getting lost in the memories, I was taken back a few, ahemm, several years to 1989. She looked at me for a few seconds and then all she said was, "Mom, can you turn that down?"
